FAQ’s ABOUT SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION

It is the most effective treatment on the market for hair loss. Tiny dots of ink are deposited on your scalp to give the appearance of sprouting hair or a shaven head. It is similar to a tattoo but doesn’t go as deep as a traditional / normal tattoo. As a result, it is suitable for everyone over 18 years old, from any background and religion.

You should expect to pay from £800 to £3200 depending on the extent of your hair loss, the size of the area we are working on and how your skin retains pigment. For an accurate quote come in for a free consultation or send us a photograph of your scalp and we can give you a quotation.

Yes, the results look entirely natural / undetectable as it looks like it’s grown out of your head and is blended into the natural hairline for a flush result. Scalp Micro pigmentation gives the illusion of a shaven head, sprouting hair, stubble or shadow. The only people who will know you’ve had treatment are those you choose to tell.

This depends on the level of hair loss. But most clients require three or four sessions over a period of one to four weeks. Each session lasts between two to four hours.

Through experience the tiny dots of ink are expertly matched to your skin tone and any remaining hair. We have treated clients from a range of ethnic backgrounds and start with a lighter shade because we can always go darker but is harder to go lighter . In the first session, we begin with a lighter shade which darkens incrementally as the treatment progresses.

We take things slowly at Ink Heads. It is best to start cautious and begin with not too low a hairline. You can tweak the height on subsequent visits. Whatever you choose, we will be by your side every step of the way, showing you pictures of various hairlines – soft, delicately receding, edged up and jagged – and drawing them on you so you can decide which suits you best. But we will also give you advice on what we think suits you. We come from a hairdressing background and have years of experience in matching hair styles to clients.

No, the pigments, needles and techniques are different from those used in traditional tattoos. SMP is specialist cosmetic tattoo for your scalp and only a technician trained in this specialist field can carry out the treatment.

No, and in some instances SMP actually stimulates new hair growth by stimulating the blood flow in the area and activating the dormant hair follicles to grow. Either way, the needle only goes into your skin’s upper dermis.

Over time, the combination of your lifestyle, natural oils produced by the scalp, bathing, sunbathing sweat and even the strength of your immune system mean that the pigment naturally fades overtime.

Most clients return for a top-up session every couple of years or so to maintain their desired look. If left for a long period of time without any touchups at all the treatment can fade completely.

The cost varies depending on what is required, but starts at £150 per hour. The maximum you should expect to pay is £1000.

It is not advisable. You should let the SMP heal for four days following each session. You should also avoid water, creams and lotions on your scalp for the same period and try and minimize sweating. After four days you can start to gently exercise.

Your skin type determines your reaction, but if you do suffer soreness or redness your technician will apply a (non-surgical) topical anesthetic after treatment. You can expect any redness to subside in 2 hours or 2 days if skin is very sensitive.

Completely safe. We use brand new needles for every treatment and sterilise all equipment after use. And we are of course fully insured and regulated.

This never happens because we use a carbon-based black pigment, diluted to your skin tone.

Yes, we do. For realistic results, matching the direction of your natural hair growth is essential.

As with any tattoo you will experience some discomfort. To mitigate this, we advise clients to have eaten before they visit the clinic and to be in general good health. It is also good practice to moisturize your scalp twice a day in the days leading up to treatment so you arrive with softened skin.

Meanwhile, any discomfort you feel will, we know, be dwarfed by a new-found confidence in your appearance.

Highly. We can work around your professional and social lives, and often treat clients early or late in the day and on the weekend. Please note, however, that our in-demand services mean we sometimes have waiting list of up to six weeks.
